Are aluminium windows energy efficient?
Modern thermally broken aluminium windows meet current Part L energy efficiency requirements and are typically rated B or A. Older (non-thermally broken) aluminium windows are poor performers — if you have 1960s–1980s aluminium windows, replacing them with thermally broken units will make a significant difference.
Why are aluminium windows more expensive than uPVC?
The profile manufacture and powder coat process is more involved than uPVC extrusion, and lead times are longer. For most residential applications the premium over uPVC is typically 15–30% depending on specification. For contemporary projects or commercial use, aluminium is almost always the right choice regardless of the price difference.
Can aluminium windows be fitted in conservation areas?
It depends on the conservation area and the local authority's guidelines. Many conservation areas permit aluminium windows with slim profiles that replicate the original steel windows — but you should check with the local authority before specifying. We can advise.
How long do aluminium windows last?
Aluminium frames are extremely durable — the frame itself can easily last 40–50 years. The powder coat finish may need touching up or re-coating after 25–30 years in exposed situations, but this is far less frequent than any maintenance requirement for uPVC or timber.
