Types of Glass Balustrade Systems

Frameless Channel System

Glass panels are fixed into a continuous floor or wall-mounted aluminium channel (U-profile). There are no visible posts — the glass appears to float. This is the cleanest, most contemporary look and suits modern homes and commercial interiors.

Spigot System

Glass panels are fixed using individual stainless steel spigots or clamps, either floor-mounted or fascia-mounted to the side of a staircase or decking frame. More flexible in terms of structure than a continuous channel.

Post & Rail System

Stainless steel or powder-coated aluminium posts with glass infill panels and a handrail on top. Provides the handrail as part of the system rather than requiring a separate handrail element. Suits both contemporary and more traditional aesthetics.

Juliet Balcony Balustrades

Frameless glass barriers for French doors opening at height — providing a safety barrier while preserving the full view and natural light. We also offer self-supporting Juliet balcony frames.

Pool Surrounds & External Terraces

Building Regulations for Glass Balustrades

All balustrades in the UK must comply with Approved Document K. Key requirements:

  • Minimum height: 900mm for stairs and ramps; 1,100mm for balconies and terraces
  • Resistance to horizontal load: The balustrade must withstand the forces specified in BS 6180

  • Opening restrictions: No opening large enough to allow a 100mm sphere to pass through (to prevent children becoming trapped)

What glass is used in glass balustrades?

Toughened laminated glass. This combines the strength of toughened glass with the safety of laminated glass — if broken, the panels hold together rather than falling. For most domestic staircases, 17.5mm toughened laminated is standard.

Does a glass balustrade need planning permission?

For internal staircases, no. For external balconies and terraces, it depends on the property — planning permission may be needed if the balcony is visible from a public area or if the property is listed. We can advise based on your specific situation.
