Where Is Toughened Glass Required?

Shower Screens & Enclosures

All shower screens should use toughened safety glass. We supply and fit frameless and semi-frameless shower screens in 8mm and 10mm toughened glass, cut to your exact shower dimensions.

Glass Doors

Internal glazed doors and fully glazed external doors must use safety glass. We supply toughened panels cut to fit existing door frames or as part of a complete door installation.

Low-Level Glazing

Building regulations require safety glass in any glazing within 800mm of floor level, and in windows within 300mm of a door. This applies to many bay window lower panes, patio door side panels and French door glazing.

Glass Balustrades

Structural glass balustrades use toughened laminated glass to meet both safety and load-bearing requirements. We supply balustrade-grade toughened laminated panels cut to size.

Office and home partitions using glass panels. Where the glazing is likely to be walked into or subject to impact, safety glass is required and strongly recommended.

What is the difference between toughened and laminated glass?

Both are safety glass types. Toughened glass shatters into small blunt pieces on impact. Laminated glass has a plastic interlayer — when it breaks, the pieces stick to the interlayer and the panel holds together. Can toughened glass be cut after it's been toughened?

No. Toughened glass cannot be cut, drilled or shaped after the toughening process — attempting to do so will shatter it. All dimensions and holes must be specified before processing.

How strong is toughened glass?

Toughened glass is approximately 4–5 times stronger than standard float glass of the same thickness. A 6mm toughened panel is typically strong enough for most domestic applications.

What thickness do I need?

This depends on the application. As a guide: 4mm for shelving and display cabinets; 6mm for internal doors and low-level glazing; 8mm for shower screens and most partitions; 10mm for balustrades and structural applications. We'll confirm the right thickness for your specific project.

How is toughened glass different from 'safety glass'?

Safety glass is an umbrella term covering both toughened and laminated glass. Both meet the building regulations requirement for safety glazing — the choice between them depends on the specific application.
