Sealed Units & Roof Glass Replacement

Conservatory roofs use either polycarbonate sheeting or glass panels in an aluminium ridge-and-bar framework. Glass roofs are substantially heavier; polycarbonate is lighter and easier to retrofit. When polycarbonate sheets age — typically after 10–15 years — they yellow, become brittle, and lose their insulating properties. The roof becomes excessively hot in summer and cold in winter.

Options:

• Polycarbonate replacement — replacing aged polycarbonate with new self-cleaning, solar control polycarbonate or clear polycarbonate. Fastest, most economical option.
• Polycarbonate to glass upgrade — replacing polycarbonate with glass roof panels in the existing aluminium framework. Glass provides significantly better thermal performance, doesn't yellow, and allows better temperature control. Requires the framework to be assessed for load capacity first.
• Solid roof replacement — beyond our scope; specialist conservatory conversion contractors handle full solid roof conversions (insulated tiled or plasterboard roofs). We can refer if this is what's needed.

For conservatory glazing — particularly roof panels — we recommend solar control glass. This reduces the amount of solar heat admitted (keeping the space cooler in summer) while maintaining good light transmission. Self-cleaning glass has a photocatalytic coating that breaks down organic dirt in UV light and allows rain to wash it away — particularly useful for roof glass that can't easily be cleaned.
