Heritage glazing requires a different approach to standard domestic window work. Secondary Glazing for Listed Buildings

Secondary glazing is the standard solution when a listed building or conservation area designation prevents replacement of original windows. A discreet secondary panel is fitted inside the existing window reveal — typically on a sliding, lift-out or side-hinged system — providing a significant improvement in thermal and acoustic performance without altering the external appearance of the building.

Secondary glazing is reversible, requires no planning permission in most cases (it's an internal alteration), and is approved for use in listed buildings by most local authority conservation officers. It can reduce heat loss by up to 70% and — for properties near Heathrow flight paths — reduce aircraft noise by up to 80% with an appropriate specification.

Lead Light Repair & Restoration

Lead lights — windows where glass pieces are held in lead H-profile came — are found in many period properties, typically in door panels, fanlight openings, porches and as decorative features in Edwardian casement windows.

We repair damaged lead lights: replacing broken or missing pieces of glass, rebonding or re-soldering where the lead structure has failed, and cementing where panels have become draughty. Where a panel has deteriorated too far to repair in situ, we remove, strip and re-lead it in our workshop.

We match existing glass types — including handmade glass, seeded glass and coloured glass — as closely as possible. Where original glass is genuinely irreplaceable, we advise on the closest available alternative.

Like-for-Like Replacement in Conservation Areas

In conservation areas, replacement windows must typically be like-for-like in terms of appearance — the same style, profile, material and operation as the originals. We supply replacement windows in appropriate specifications:

Planning Compliance — What We Advise

Heritage glazing can be a minefield. Our approach is to advise honestly:

  • Listed buildings: Listed building consent is almost always needed for window replacement; secondary glazing usually doesn't need consent. We'll tell you what applies.

  • Article 4 directions: Some conservation areas have Article 4 directions removing specific permitted development rights even further. We check for this when we survey.

Can I replace the windows in my listed building?

Almost certainly not without listed building consent. The application of LBC for windows depends on the listing grade and local authority — some are more sympathetic than others. Secondary glazing is the usual practical solution.

Is secondary glazing acceptable in a listed building?

Generally yes — secondary glazing is an internal alteration that doesn't affect the external character of the building and is usually not subject to listed building consent. However, the design and fixings need to be appropriate and non-damaging to the original fabric.

Can you repair leaded light panels?

Yes. We repair and restore leaded light panels in situ or removed to the workshop. The approach depends on the extent of damage and the fragility of the existing glass.
