Bi-fold doors are the go-to opening for kitchen extensions and rear elevations — and the demand for them across Uxbridge and West London remains consistently strong. Bi-Fold Door Specifications

Frame Profiles

We supply thermally broken aluminium bi-fold systems with slim front-face widths — typically 80–100mm on the sightline between panels. This is significantly slimmer than timber or uPVC alternatives and is the primary reason aluminium is almost universally preferred for this application.

Thermally broken means there's a structural thermal barrier between the outer and inner aluminium sections — meeting Part L energy requirements and ensuring the inner frame doesn't become a cold bridge.

Panel Configurations

Bi-fold doors are specified by the number of panels and which direction they stack. Common configurations:

  • 2-panel — typically up to 1.8m wide; both panels fold to one side
  • 3-panel — up to ~2.7m; two panels stack to one side, one to the other
  • 4-panel — up to ~3.6m; equal split (2+2) or traffic door (3+1 with a leaf that opens independently without folding the full set)
  • 5 and 6-panel — for wider openings; typically up to ~5.4m
  • Corner bi-fold — where two runs of bi-fold meet at a corner without a post

Threshold Options

  • Low-threshold — a small step down at the opening; standard specification; suitable for most domestic installations
  • Flush threshold — completely level transition between inside and out; requires careful drainage management; excellent for wheelchair accessibility or a seamless indoor/outdoor flow
  • Rebated threshold — provides greater weather resistance; slight step both sides

Colour & Glazing

Powder coat in any RAL colour — or dual colour (different inside and out). Most common: Anthracite Grey outside with white or grey inside. All panels are double glazed with A-rated sealed units. Low-iron (extra-clear) glass available for maximum light transmission.

  1. Site survey — We visit to measure the structural opening, check the floor and head levels, and confirm the threshold detail with the builder (if the extension is still in progress)
  2. Order — Frames and glass manufactured to your exact dimensions; lead time typically 4–6 weeks
  3. Installation — Frames fitted into the structural opening, glazed, sealed and adjusted; running gear adjusted for smooth operation
  4. FENSA registration — Certificate issued
  5. Guarantee — 10-year manufacturer guarantee on frames; 5-year on sealed units

Frequently Asked Questions

Do bi-fold doors need planning permission?

Usually not for rear extensions under permitted development. If the property is listed, in a conservation area or in a designated area, check with the local authority first. We can advise.

Are bi-fold doors draughty or prone to leaking?

A quality aluminium bi-fold with a correctly installed threshold will perform well in weather. The key is the threshold specification and the correct adjustment of the panels and gaskets. We set all doors up correctly before we leave.

Can bi-fold doors be used as a front entrance?

They can, but it's unusual. Front entrances typically use pivot doors, single or double hinged doors, or sliding systems rather than bi-folds. Contact us if you're considering something non-standard — we can advise.

What's the maximum width for a bi-fold door?

This depends on the system, but six-panel bi-fold systems can reach up to around 5.4m. Beyond this, bifolds are typically not practical and a sliding or frameless opening system may be more appropriate.
